Well I’m not talking about news, we all have our favorite news sites Digg and Slashdot? I’m talking about Windows Software, not windows itself. You should have windows update turned on for that. I’m talking about everything else, how do you keep it updated. Do you wait for the software to complain that it is old? Do you have several updaters running in the background, for instance, Java Update or Quicken update? If so, you are wasting memory and slowing down your system. My wife’s boss tells her they think the computer has gone out. It won’t boot up. So I’m asked to look at it, see if I can figure out what is wrong or if they just need to buy a new machine. At first glance I can tell there is nothing wrong with the hardware, but something is wrong it won’t load windows. It just starts then hangs.

Zero Top Windows Software of 2008
As a long time computer user, and a nerd. Let me give you my run down of “Got to Have” software. This is software I use personally and recommend. These are all windows based software, if you are using Linux (Ubuntu) it comes with everything you need.

OpenDNS – Protect your children, Period!
I’ve been asked many times, heck the other day at work someone asked. “How do you protect your children while they surf?” I’ve tried several programs, many of them cost quite a bit. I’ve also used some of the free one’s. Problem is, there are things to install. There are things to maintain. There are Cost. Not with OpenDNS. More important it is also free, and protecting your children should not cost an arm and a leg.

I recently posted about sending e-cards, and then I go to work and there is an outbreak. Wouldn’t you know it was started via E-Cards. As of now some virus scanners are picking it up, most are still not. It bothers me when the scanners I would normally trust are not detecting it yet. Being I use open source scanner I just made my own signature to catch it.
