I was asked to provide a Do’s and Don’t list for a friend who is just starting with Facebook. These are something everyone should be aware of and use if they are going to use Facebook or any other social media site for that matter. Some people use Facebook for social marketing and that is fine, if that is what you are trying to do.
Facebook Do:
Use your real name or people you are wanting to connect with you won’t be able to find you. Facebook is a social network after all.
Use your real picture, but make it professional something that will not embarrass you or others later. See MsNBC link here!
Do use the Facebook privacy settings to limit who can see your full profile. This is found top right corner Settings -> Privacy Settings -> Profile Set to only friends on all selections and also select Contact and set it to only friends.
Do tag pictures you post so friends know when you have put their picture online. They should be aware when a picture of them is posted online. It is courteous and hopefully they will do the same back to you.
Do be courteous of strangers that send you friend request, you may not be the only person on the planet with your name. Just hit reject and go on with your day.
Only accept friend request of people that you actually know, verify it is who they say it is. Call or email them to confirm if you need to. Facebook is not a popularity contest, if you are looking for that head on over to MySpace.
Do limit the type of email notifications that come to you from Facebook. If you do not, you could be email bombed by Facebook messages. Found in Settings -> Account Settings -> Notifications
Report any threats of violence or inappropriate posts or images to Facebook and to the proper real world authorities like school officials, parents, and police.
Do have fun! Facebook is a great way to stay in touch with people you know.
Facebook Don’t
Don’t leave the default privacy settings, see the do above. Number one thing most Facebook users do not do!
Don’t be afraid to reject someone doing a friend request, they don’t see the rejection. Your really not friends with everyone. No really your not. Seriously!
Don’t accept and use every widget, app, contest, and quiz sent to you by friends. While some are fun, most are annoying and some are even malicious.
Don’t become a small time spammer sending out all the kewl new Apps you have found to all your friends.
Don’t write or post anything that would embarrass yourself or others. This can affect your school, college, and job in the future. Many companies now use Facebook, MySpace, and other social networks for background checks when hiring new employees.
Don’t make public where you are going or plan to go or with whom you plan to go with. Cyber Stalkers are a real threat and if you have one this tells them where to find you in real life.
Don’t be afraid to join public groups about interest you share. Just be careful what you post on these groups. Never give out personal information.
