Recently my daughter brought me a book to read. Gasp! This would not be a big deal, but I really don’t read much. OK, so I don’t read books much. Online Google Reader, Birmingham Terminal, Digg, Slashdot, etc.. So I ventured off to sit down with this book. I must admit I was apprehensive about this book to begin with. Once I started reading it tho I couldn’t stop. It is not just another book about Albert Einstein, but the equation he came up with in 1905. This is a biography of E=MC2. Everyone knows it, but do you really know what it means?
This book starts off with the history of each part of the equation energy, mass, and celeritas squared of course. Do you understand how the equation actually works? Do you know what celeritas is? This book answered a lot of these questions for me in ways that are very understandable and presents the history.
It then goes into the uses of E=MC2. Everyone knows about the bomb? Do you know how close the German’s where to having it also? Do you know who the hero’s are that stopped the German’s from creating theirs? What about other practical uses? The importance the equation has to everyday life. Did you know without the product of E=MC2 you would not exist?
This is a great book by author David Bodanis. I would highly recommend it even if your not into science, it is a great history book also.
