The Associated Press put out a story here “Panel: Technology alone can’t protect kids online“. In the story an Harvard-Led panel concluded that “no single approach is foolproof and that parental oversight is vital“. As a father I say Duh!
I would never trust technology alone to protect my children. I use technology to help me, seeOpenDNS – Protect your children. This is used as just one tool, this is not total protection. In reality it was put in place because my little ones like to randomly type things in the URL box.
If you want to protect your children here is a good start:
Give out NO personal information online, Period! Nothing…
Do NOT put a computer in your child’s room where it is unsupervised
Do NOT allow them to be on the computer at all times of the day or night
Do NOT let them think they have or deserve privacy while they are online
Do NOT let them have a MySpace, Facebook, email, chat or anything else that you do not have access to, my house my rules!
The number one rule: Talk to your children!
These are just some basics, but they have served me and my wife well. My children know that I can and do have access to everything that happens on my home network.
I want my children to use the Internet, to be able to expand their minds and learn. All children should have access to this tool, it is vitally important to their future no matter what they decide to be. Like driving a car, technology is a tool to help your child get from point A to point B and just like driving a car, children must be taught the rules and how to be safe on the Internet.
