Going full SKYPE at Home Part 1

skype logo Going full SKYPE at Home Part 1In today’s economy my wife and I are looking for a way to save a dollar or two.  We’ve given up the new car for an older mini van.  We’ve almost completely given up eating out.  We’ve been buying household items in bulk and on sales.  This time the wife asked me to go over the Cable bill.

Our services from Cable provider are Internet, Phone, and Cable TV. We currently have every cable channel available including one pay channel HBO.  The bill is $168.55 + tax. Well we do not want to give up TV completely and with our busy schedule we would not get to watch anything without DVR.  So that is a must keep. We hardly ever watch HBO so that can go. We also decided that we could give up home phone service, after all we all have cell phones. Problem with that is cell signal is  hit or miss where I live.  So we have decided to go Skype for home phone service.

I guess about 7 months ago, I purchased an Auvi phone system.  This is a Skype enabled cordless phone with 2 handsets.  I have used it before with Skype, and it works very well.

$168.55
- $39.95 (phone service)
-   $9.00 (HBO)
————————-
$119.60 + Tax

This is a savings of $587.40 for a year.

We will be adding SkypeIn at $30.00 for the year and $35.40 for SkypeOut for the year. That is a one time fee of $65.40 for the year.

So to me at this point it is a no brainer. Has anyone else given up a “Bell” Phone for something like Skype? What did you go with? How is the quality? What hardware/software did you use?

Setup Currently: Auvi Skype Phones, Tomato wrt54g Router, enable QOS for Skype.

I will update as I move forward.

So do you just make calls from your PC then when you are home? Did you have your old line number ported over to skype?

The phone system I am using supports Skype so I will be using it. It is actually a cordless phone system. So I just pick up the phone and either dial or use my Skype contact list to make a call. Unfortunately the local Telco won’t port a number to Skype so I will either use the SkypeIn number I choose or use my Google GrandCentral Number.

I like your post, I used skype for some time, but then I moved to Vopium because of Its Vopium Sync application, With Sync app I am able to make mobile data backup. Skype is good and quite cheap and for you I think its best :)
