OpenDNS – Protect your children, Period!

OpenDNS Protect your Children

I’ve been asked many times, heck the other day at work someone asked. “How do you protect your children while they surf?” I’ve tried several programs, many of them cost quite a bit. I’ve also used some of the free one’s. Problem is, there are things to install. There are things to maintain. There are Cost. Not with OpenDNS. More important it is also free, and protecting your children should not cost an arm and a leg.

Currently I have a Linksys wrt54g version 2 router and I am running Tomato firmware. With this setting up OpenDNS is simple.

Create a free account. Use OpenDNS

Select the type of Network you want to use it on. Home, School, Small Business, or Enterprise.

Select how you are going to set it up, Computer or Router.

Continue by Selecting the device you want to use and following the directions. But basically what you want to do is use 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 for your DNS Servers.

Fill out the information to create your account.

That is it, well not completely. Next you want to configure your setting, using Tomato firmware I have setup Dynamic DNS to auto update OpenDNS, it is built right in. Then in my account I go to Settings –> Content Filtering and I can select from a list of pre sorted sites to block. I can also choose a level to block.

There is so many options when using OpenDNS and it will also speed your surfing up. Give it a try! It is well worth the use.

Use OpenDNS

Oh yea one more thing I really enjoy, ShortCuts! These are also simple to setup. With them setup it allows you to type the shortcut in the URL bar and go directly to the site. Here are my current shortcuts.
