Digsby Blog » Keeping Digsby Free and Ad-Free. Today I installed the newest beta of Digsby, and I must say I’m finally impressed with it. Let me just say… Wow!
First off I tried an older version and it was horrid. It slowed my computer down like I was running Bluntman’s, sorry inside joke, work computer. Trust me if you have ever seen this computer you would understand what slow is. It runs fast, it handles every social web 2.0 place I need it to. It has Twitter, Facebook, all the major IM’s, supports OpenFire (used at work), and checks your email. Now if only it would get my coffee in the morning.
So while this is faster it actually does something even better. It actually frees up memory and processor. I’m not running Twhirl, Pidgin, x number of browser pages for Email, Facebook, etc… Do not get me wrong, I love these applications they have served me well and if Digsby ends up breaking something along the way. I’d be the first to go back to them.
Though this is not the reason for this post, the true reason for this post is to talk about companies/development groups that put something out free then go and charge for it. I’m not against someone making a dollar, everyone has to pay their bills. What I’m against is doing it the wrong way. I know I have personally installed many software packages that insert ads and or installs browser addons, or worst extra software to your computer without you wanting them. It has gotten so bad you can’t even buy a computer from a major computer seller without having to uninstall a bunch of crap before you can use it.
So a big’o Kudos to you Digsby for doing it the right way, I will gladly support your endeavors.
If you want to get the newest alpha version I’m running – http://blog.digsby.com/archives/57
