DropBox, now that is how you do it!

DropBox is an online file storage, synchronization, and backup system. While other services only offer online file storage, backup, or sync they provide it all. You can access your files online at http://www.getdropbox.com/ and or via a installed program on your computer. One of my biggest problems with other online services has been you have to do everything from a web interface. Once you install the software, you will have a folder in your “My Documents” directory. To put it easy any file put in this folder will be synced with the DropBox server.  dropbox

Now install this same software on another PC and connect with the same account. This folder shows up again in “My Documents” again and the files from the first PC are now on both. Place a file in the folder on the second PC and within minutes check the same file on the first PC and it will be there.

Other great features include an online image browser, the ability to share a folder with others, and a revision system.

Now here is some fun things I have now done and do with DropBox. Allot of people are scared of security, this is not a hard thing to fix. Using Gnupg (You use it don’t you?”) you can encrypt files stored on the server. Simply encrypt the file before putting it in your DropBox.

Better yet! Install TrueCrypt, now talk about a nice way to do this. You can create an encrypted file container in your DropBox, I would even recommend using a Keyfile or two. Store the keyfiles on a USB Key. Now when you go from one machine to the other, you can mount the encrypted drive with all your files. You will of course loose the ability to see the files via a web interface. If anyone is interested I can go into details on how to do this.

NOTICE: For anyone interested I have invites for DropBox available. Leave a comment with a way to contact you and I will send you an invite. These will last till I run out.

Have you tried Syncplicity? It’s just as simple and intuitive as Dropbox but lets you sync and share any folder

They have a cool tour at http://www.syncplicity.com/Tour/

Why do I need you to get a dropbox? I'm happy to go thru' you but not sure I understand why not just go to their web page and sign up.

  23. You don't need or have to use my link for dropbox. If you do I get more space in mine, but that is all. You can absolutely go to their website and sign up directly.
